Hello everyone, I'm in a hurry and my firewall thought this page was dangerous to waste my time! However, I'm a JAWS user and can't say enough how much I like the GW Skype Connect, it makes standard Skype which despite scripts has got impossible to access properly well accessible again, so if anyone uses Skype Connect or even standard Skype feel free to add me on timothy.david.bamber But happy to hear if people like Connect or not! Right got to go rowign!:)) Kind regards, Timber, (TimothY)!
Hi all. I to have to say that gw connect makes skype much easier to use than the regular skype client, especially with the newest version, 2.0, which just came out today. They've added a lot of new features. I'd encourage everyone to go check it out at www.gwmicro.com/apps/gwconnect
I've never had any issues using Skype at all with the Jaws Scripts or Skype talking. My question is does this make it work for Window Eyes? You do say GW, so I am assuming?
I went to the link provided and I think this program is beautiful. I'm a Jaws user, so am excited that all that use GW screen readers will now catch up.
Skype is a great program for doing many things, and I am one of these that use it as my main telephone, and my cell as the travel or secondary phone.
I figured I must have internet service anyway, so why pay for land line service on top when my computer is on all the time anyway, and if not my cell works?
Nice!
Hi. The biggest thing is that gw connect has no adds for window-eyes users. However if you want to use another screenreadere and use gw connect, you're welcome to use it for free but you'll get the occasional add for window-eyes. GW has implemented a way to get rid of the adds if they bother you enough, but it'll cost you $4.95/month or $50.00 a year. Some people like this, some don't. The initial skype client was never hard to use with wineyes, but gw connect does make it easy, no matter what screenreader you're using.
Well being that Jaws scripts and Skype Talking make Skype completely accessible I can't see Jaws users paying to use this one.
True, and the ads aren't that bad. Just hit your control key and you won't have to listen to them, if you're a Jaws user anyway. If you're using Sappi speech, I suppose you're stuck with them unless you pay for the ad free version.
More blind related apps need to use ads to support themselves, in my opinion. That is how a lot of free apps are actually free for all other users. The hardest thing in Skype is the file transfers, for some reason.
Anybody know how to receive files easily using Skype, or is this also something that GWConnect make easy? Also does it do incoming calls conveniently the way that Skype does?
I take it you run it instead of Skype?
Sure. You have the scripts installed receiving a file is as simple as excepting it. It also gets in your received files folder.
With incoming calls I simple set the hot keys and I press alt page up to answer it alt page down to hang it up. If I have Skype talking running I also can hear who's calling me or if I miss it I press control alt shift and D I think. I do it so offten it is automatic so I'd have to do it to see. Lol
Anthing Skype offers is at my finger tips with some combination of key strokes.
I don't have a problem with them charging other screen reader users to use it without the add, because we have had access to Skype for years. If we want to use this one we should help pay for it. If you buy Window Eyes you are helping right?
actually unless somethign got messed up i still get ads even though i do use window-eyes.
I still don't like how for the rest of us who don't just use window-eyes we have to pay so much, i mean 50 a year to remove ads when all you hav e to do is uncheck a box in skype and they're gone completely? not for me
I like it. I've never particularly cared for regular Skype because until recently both JFW and Window-Eyes required scripts for it to run correctly. Heck even now it's recommended that you install the Skype app if you want to use regular Skype. But GW Connect simplifies it at least in my book. And I've never goten adds for Window-Eyes. Yeah I'm a WE user, so I don't understand why Rat still gets them.
Hello again everyone,
I must download later on, the new version 2.0 I heard about it the other day two, 71 new features apparently, last version of 1.0 only days earlier was down to 2 (and smallones at that), so new a big release was very near, well not quite, but had an inkling!
I think with version 2 a JAWS user (and I'm one BTW) can now avoid the adverts, but they are quyite short and anyway one can just hit control to 'silence' them to echo what was said above.
Yes, you can nowadays, since the version before the first one I used after I heard from a friend I.E. 1.03, use both at the same time but think it is not recommended, I did for a while but in the last few weeks not bothered, so again on my list to upgrade and personally and normally I'm a good computer user, well reasonable on the software side standard skype has nothing short of stumped me and the JAWS scripts have hardly changed this, so I'll give GW Micro credit for the first time in my life, even though I was teased on FB recently, and am impressed by something else but that is not GW Micro connected so won't go into that here, and I'll believe it is their only app to date available to other Windows Screen reader users, so call me a trator if you like, but my humble opinion is that I couldn't use very easily skype any other way so thank you GW Micro I say!:))/*SMILE*
Kind regards,
Timber AKA timothy Bamber User #7902
NB: and sorry for the post script not been #connected' if you pardon the pun but I'm curious what does 'GW' stand for does anyone know this?
Again cool. Smile. Whatever works and brings computing to us is great in my opinion.
Not sure where the problems are coming from and even with the skype client alone I didn't have any issues except for voicemails which I don't actually get anyway even now that I can get them easily. I have no idea where the other acccessibility issues come about, as everything else is fairly accessible to me. file transfers are not much more of a bother then anything else. you just have to go to the chat slot by tabbing a few times, hit your jaws curser and arrow up to the accept button which is easy enough. I have shared files quite a few times as one of the persons I get my files from don't actually have dropbox. So, I know it works. and sending them is also easy enough. I use skype talking too though, but no scripts, I really don't see much trouble without them. I might try the scripts for fun, but it wouldn't be for accessibility. it would be more like what else can this thing do. but anyhow, I just don't see much of a point in a separate skype client when it works already. I don't mind hitting a few extra buttons, sometimes that's life, really.
I say getting rid of the old landline or cells altogether is a bad idea. if the phone runs out of electricity, there's a way to have it so that you can have eigh hours of power that it can run on. Neither computers or cells really last that long, and besides the landlines are more clear and such. It also tracks your location better if you have to call 911 at any given point and you'd always have signal coverage where the cellphone can be more unreliable like that.
I have used Skype with scripts and GW Connect. i can use either or, and not sure which i prefer.
i do like how the jaws scripts you can h use the alt-1 thru 0 commands to read messages.
I have just learned that with Jaws 14 the latest version and the latest version of Skype it is possible to use Skype well with nothing else. Maybe it will get good enough to be completely that way like messenger soon.
